frenulum of the tongue

frenulum of the tongue [L, frenum, bridle; AS, tunge] , a longitudinal fold of mucous membrane connecting the floor of the mouth to the underside of the tongue in midline. A congenital defect causes an abnormal shortness of the frenulum, causing tongue-tie, which can be surgically corrected. Also called frenulum linguae, lingual frenum.
