fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) /-mus″kyələr/ , an arterial disorder sometimes associated with strokes or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). The condition, which may appear as either fibromuscular hyperplasia or perimuscular fibrosis, is characterized by intraluminal folds of fibrous endothelial tissue. They appear as vertical bars on angiography and become the originating site of platelet adherence aggregation and thrombus formation. The condition commonly involves the renal arteries and is associated with hypertension.
