fetal biophysical profile, an ultrasound method of evaluating fetal status during the antepartal period based on five variables originating within the fetus: fetal heart rate, breathing movement, gross movements, muscle tone, and amniotic fluid volume. It is indicated in cases of postdate pregnancy, maternal hypertension, diabetes mellitus, vaginal bleeding, maternal Rh sensitization, maternal history of stillbirth, and premature membrane rupture.
