emergency medical technician–intermediate (EMT-I), individuals with specialized training who provide emergency care, typically in an ambulance, until a patient can reach a hospital. There are two EMT-I levels, each with slightly different responsibilities. EMTs function as part of a comprehensive emergency medical services (EMS) response, with medical oversight. EMT licensure is provided by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Compare emergency medical technician–advanced life support. See also emergency medical services.
