drug allergy

drug allergy, hypersensitivity to a pharmacological agent. Manifestations range from a mild rash to anaphylactic shock, depending on the dose and the allergen sensitivity of the individual. The primary drug that produces allergy is penicillin. Others include aspirin, phenylbutazone, novobiocin, other antibiotics, and radiopaque contrast media containing iodine. See also anaphylactic shock. Should not be confused with drug sensitivity.
