doxapram hydrochloride /dok″səpram/ , a respiratory stimulant. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed to improve respiratory function after anesthesia, in drug-induced central nervous system depression, and for chronic pulmonary disease associated with acute hypercapnia. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Seizure disorder, pulmonary disease, coronary artery disease, uncompensated heart failure, hypertension, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are convulsions, bronchospasm, cardiovascular symptoms, and phlebitis.
