Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients, for example, may experience severe malnutrition, wasting, weight loss, hypermetabolism, and altered energy metabolism. Human immunodeficiency virus causes blunting of intestinal villi and secretion of abnormal intestinal enzymes, resulting in severe diarrhea and malabsorption.
