discovery

discovery /diskov″ərē/ [L, dis + coopiere, to cover] , (in law) a pretrial procedure that allows one party to examine vital witnesses and documents held exclusively by the adverse party. Discovery is limited to materials, facts, and other resources that could not otherwise be reasonably expected to be discovered and that are necessary to the preparation of the case for trial. Also called pretrial discovery. Compare deposition, interrogatories.
