differentiation therapy, a cancer therapy technique in which the malignant cell is regarded as having escaped the normal controls of cell growth and differentiation. The cancer cell is regarded as pathologically arrested at an early stage of differentiation, retaining the ability to proliferate. It is treated with agents that remove this block and allow the cells to differentiate along more normal lines until they eventually lose their ability to divide and replicate.
