African tick fever, a tickborne or spotted fever caused by Rickettsia africae that develops into a diffuse rash. Symptoms appear 2 weeks after the bite and often include fever, headache, muscle soreness, and rash. Multiple eschars, lymphangitis, lymphadenopathy, and edema are common. At the site of the tick bite the skin will be red and sore with a dark center. See also relapsing fever.
