diethylpropion hydrochloride /dī·eth′ilprō″pē·on/ , an appetite suppressant; a central nervous system stimulant. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed as a short-term adjunct in the treatment of exogenous obesity. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Arteriosclerosis, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, history of drug dependence or drug abuse, hypertension, concomitant administration of a monoamine oxidase inhibitor within 14 days, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse reactions are restlessness and insomnia, increased blood pressure, arrhythmias, cardiovascular effects, nausea, dry mouth, and drug dependence.
