developmental disability (DD), an impairment caused by a neurologic or physical deficit beginning before an individual reaches 22 years of age. It affects activities of daily living and significantly impairs the individual’s general intellectual and/or adaptive functioning. Most developmental disabilities persist throughout the individual’s life, although many can be effectively treated. See also congenital anomaly.
