dental hygienist, an oral health care professional authorized to provide clinical and therapeutic services under the supervision of a licensed dentist, including dental prophylaxis, radiography, administration of medications, and dental education at chairside and in the community. In some states, a dental hygienist with additional education may administer local anesthetics and nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia, place and carve filling materials, conduct additional periodontal procedures, and function as a public health specialist. To practice as a registered dental hygienist, a person must complete at least 2 years of postsecondary education in an accredited community or dental college or university, successfully complete written and practical examinations, and be approved by a state or regional board of dental and dental hygiene examiners.
