demeclocycline hydrochloride /dēmek′lōsī″klēn/ , a tetracycline antibiotic. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed in the treatment of various gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections, including those in which use of penicillin is contraindicated. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: Renal or liver dysfunction, pregnancy, early childhood, or known hypersensitivity to this drug or to other tetracycline medication prohibits its use. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: Among the more serious adverse effects are GI disturbances, phototoxicity, potentially serious superinfections, and hypersensitivity reactions. Discoloration of teeth may occur in children exposed to the drug in utero or before 8 years of age.
