dalteparin sodium, a low-molecular-weight heparin. ▪ INDICATIONS: It is prescribed to prevent deep vein thrombosis in adults undergoing abdominal surgery who are at risk for clotting. It is also used for the treatment of unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction to prevent ischemic complications in patients with concurrent aspirin therapy. ▪ CONTRAINDICATIONS: It should not be given to patients with allergy to dalteparin, heparin, or pork products or to patients with certain blood disorders. ▪ ADVERSE EFFECTS: The side effects most often reported include heavy or unusual bleeding, black stools, or bruising or pain at the site of injection.
