cytotoxic anaphylaxis

cytotoxic anaphylaxis [Gk, kytos + toxikon, poison, hyper, above] , complement-dependent hypersensitivity to foreign cells or to alterations of cell-surface antigens that is mediated by immunoglobulin G (IgG) or IgM. It causes immediate destruction of cells, as seen in hemolytic disease of the newborn and in severe transfusion reactions. Also called cytotoxic hypersensitivity, type II hypersensitivity. Compare anaphylactic hypersensitivity, immunocomplex hypersensitivity. See also immune gamma globulin.
