Abnormalities in the gene cause cystic fibrosis, leading to abnormal chloride channels in cell membranes of the respiratory epithelium, pancreas, salivary glands, sweat glands, intestines, and reproductive tract. Also called cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator, cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator protein.
